Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) youth experience dating abuse at the same rates and in similar ways as heterosexual couples do.Straight and same-sex domestic violence share many common characteristics: The generally accepted model of a male aggressor and female survivor cannot be easily applied when dealing with victims in same-sex relationships.Same-sex couples there- fore face certain impediments to having their domestic violence issues recognized and addressed that straight couples do not: Domestic violence among same-sex couples is a serious public health concern.Domestic violence in same-sex families does occur, however.Studies have found that domestic violence occurs among same-sex couples at comparable rates to straight couples: Both straight and gay victims of domestic violence experience a similar pattern of abuse, albeit with some notable distinctions.There has not been research on dating or domestic violence in the bisexual or transgender community, so we are soley commenting on abuse in gay and lesbian relationships.
Everybody deserves a safe and healthy relationship.
Some of the dynamics of dating violence in gay and lesbian relationships differ from heterosexual relationships.
For example, the way in which an abusive partner controls a relationship could be through threats of “outing” his/her partner to family, friends, coworkers and/or associates.
